INTERNATIONAL

In today’s global news:

  • Worldometer is tracking COVID-19 cases and fatalities.

  • The New York Times is tracking global vaccine distribution.

MIDDLE EAST

YEMEN

The chances of a durable peace settlement emerging out of Yemen’s two month ceasefire don’t look terribly good at this point, though to be fair it’s early. But at the very least the ceasefire, which is holding, has given aid organizations a chance to expand their operations into parts of the country that have been largely cut off for years. Unfortunately the ceasefire also comes at a time when skyrocketing global food prices mean donor cash isn’t going as far as it once did, and when donors don’t seem all that interested in Yemen anymore anyway. The United Nations says it needs $4.27 billion to fund Yemeni aid efforts this year, but so far it’s received pledges totaling substantially less than that.
